Better Biomass – NTA 8080
Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in our society. Sustainable products contribute less to CO2 emissions, enhance biodiversity or are produced with an eye for the welfare of humans and animals. A Better Biomass certificate (NTA 8080 Certified) shows that the biomass that is produced, processed, traded or used is sustainable.
What is Better Better Biomass certification?
According to the European Directive (EU) 2018/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II), bio-raw materials used as biofuel or bioenergy must be sustainably produced. The directive provides a set of rules to limit negative impacts. The terms NTA 8080 and Better Biomass are often used interchangeably. Basically they refer to the same standards.
Better Biomass is (provisionally) recognised by the European Commission within the scope of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (Renewable Energy Directive). The Better Biomass certification scheme has been accepted by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA) and certification audits are performed by independent certification bodies accredited to the Better Biomass certification scheme.
Better Biomass is managed by the Netherlands standardisation institute (NEN) and meets international sustainability criteria and chain management requirements. The criteria are published in the standards below:
- NTA 8080-1 (Sustainably produced biomass for bioenergy and bio-based products – Part 1: Sustainability requirements) and;
- NTA 8080-2 (Sustainably produced biomass for bioenergy and bio-based products – Part 2: Chain-of-custody requirements).
