Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a non-profit organisation in which all sectors of the palm oil industry are represented, with the aim of making palm oil more sustainable.

Why is sustainable palm oil important?

Palmolie is used in many products. It is used in foodstuffs such as margarine, chocolate and ice cream, but it also has applications in cosmetics, animal feed or as a biofuel in power stations.

Palm oil is made from the fruit of the oil palm, which only grows in tropical climates. Most palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia. To make room for the cultivation of palm oil, many forests were and are being cut down, with serious consequences for local biodiversity.

By participating in the RSPO scheme, companies commit to making the entire supply chain more sustainable, from producer to end user of palm oil. Think, for example, of growers, oil mills, storage locations, refineries, traders and producers of products in which sustainable palm oil is used. All these links can be certified. You too can contribute to sustainable palm oil and participate in RSPO.

In order to be RSPO certified, the conditions from the RSPO standards are elaborated in a quality system or included in the existing quality system. In addition, the company must set up a tracking & tracing system in the form of a mass balance to record the sustainability data. A sustainability declaration of the cargo must be drawn up for each batch.

Maintaining sustainability data is an important part of RSPO certification and must be done accurately. How long it takes to implement RSPO depends on the type of company, the tracking & tracing system in place and the amount of transactions that the company carries out.
